WORKSHOP CONTENT & LEARNING OUTCOMES:
Join fellow Mountain Training Association members for an inspiring, conservation-focused day in Wicklow Mountains National Park. This free peer-led CPD workshop explores real-world upland restoration efforts and offers a learning experience for outdoor leaders, guides, and conservation-minded walkers. Led by Mountain Leader and Leave No Trace Trainer Elena, this session will include guided site visits to woodland gullies and peatland recovery zones, alongside open discussions on environmental challenges and solutions in Ireland’s upland landscapes.
The hike will cover moderate terrain, including uneven, boggy paths with occasional
rocky and moderately steep sections. It will feature some rough ground and
moderate ascents, with a total distance of 12–15 km and an elevation gain of
approximately 500 meters. Throughout the hike, there will be multiple educational
stops.
This workshop qualifies for 1 CPD Point for Mountain Training Association.
Content and Learning Outcomes
1. Introduction to Ireland’s National Parks and Upland Ecology
2. Understanding Threats to Mountain and Upland Environments
3. Conservation in Action:
-Gully woodland restoration
-Blanket Bogs restoration projects
-Stabilising slopes, improving water quality, and boosting biodiversity

5. Guided Field Walk: Visiting key conservation sites in Wicklow Mountains National Park
EQUIPMENT/KIT REQUIRED:
Full hill day kit (appropriate clothing, footwear, waterproofs)
Day pack with food, snacks, and plenty of fluids for 5–6 hours
Notebook & pen, camera/phone for notes/photos
Optional: binoculars, hand lens for ecology observation
CATERING/FOOD Participants should bring their own food and drink for the day. There will be a short lunch stop during the walk.
WORKSHOP PROVIDER CREDENTIALS Elena is a qualified Mountain Leader (MLS), accredited Leave No Trace Trainer, and a 2024 graduate of the Nature Conservation and Interpretation course offered by National Parks and Wildlife
Services, Leave No Trace Ireland and Munster Thechnological University. She
volunteers in wildlife rehabilitation and mountain blanket bog restoration projects in
her free time.
CANCELLATION PROCEDURE As this is a free peer-led MTA event, there is no formal cancellation fee, but please cancel in advance if you are unable to attend so your place can be offered to someone else.
