About

INAUGURAL PEAK DISTRICT VERSION!

Bouldering is unique in climbing: it is the only discipline where it is intended to fall to the ground. As such, teaching bouldering outdoors requires a change in attitude and approach and goes against the instincts developed by most established rock climbing instructors.

This workshop looks to demonstrate effective methods of safeguarding climbers using a Risk-Consequence Balance; the Hierarchy of Pads; methods of effective spotting to keep both climber and spotter free from injury; and other common practices used by established boulderers, to allow you to teach outdoor bouldering safely and effectively, as well as understanding the unique differences inherent to the modern boulderer compared to trad or sports climbers.

This workshop is run at the Roaches. However, given the vagaries of the weather, the specific crag chosen for the workshop will be selected nearer the time to accomodate current weather conditions. However it will be within easy commute of Upper Hulme and plenty of notice will be given for meet and greet. Transport is not provided and participants are expected to make their own way to the crag parking, which will be detailed in advance.

A series of course notes are included as part of the workshop.

The Teaching Outdoor Bouldering Workshop is unfortunately one that needs to happen in the dry and with the UK being as it is, occasionally this means we may need to rearrange. If necessary, we can run the course in the rain but typically, a wet forecast will lead to the course being cancelled and your booking being transferred to a date to suit you in the future. There is no charge for this. To see the Prowess Cancellation Policy, please click here

This workshop is run by professional climbing coach and dedicated boulderer, Pete Edwards. Pete is a bouldering specialist, having recorded more than 1000 boulder problems at over 130 crags in ten different countries over the past twenty years, up to font 7c+/V10 and with several first ascents up to font 7b/V8. He holds the Development Coach Award and a Master's Degree in Elite Performance. He regularly provides workshops for Beacon Climbing Centre's staff development, often specialising in delivery of bouldering specifically.
