About

GPS Training for Outdoor Navigators and Leaders - ELEMENTARY LEVEL get to grips with your GPS device. Technology based on GPS has had a significant impact on techniques and best practice for outdoor navigators and leaders. In particular, the ability to relocate swiftly and accurately, anywhere, at any time, especially in an emergency, is considered a vital skill for outdoor navigators, walking and mountain leaders. This workshop is one of three sessions that will be running in mid October. All three workshops are listed below should you wish to book on others too: • Elementary – 13 Oct: an essentials course for absolute beginners and those who are either not familiar with GPS, or uncomfortable with “smart” technological devices. • Basic to Intermediate – 14 Oct: this is for competent outdoor navigators who may have used a GPS device in the past, wish to learn more before buying one, or may even own one but have not used it often. This really gets to grip with the core GPS skills and the capabilities of modern devices. • Intermediate to Advanced – 15 Oct: a one-day course for expert outdoor navigators who own a GPS and use it, but would like to develop their skills to use the GPS as their principal navigation device. This course focuses on navigation using built-in GPS digital mapping together with an extended session on using PC or laptop digital mapping with a GPS unit. Each course has an element of overlap; however, it is possible to do 2 consecutive courses to consolidate and develop skills (but it’s not recommended to do all 3 as this would be too intense!). For all courses, participants may borrow a GPS unit with the latest technology but, where possible, those who own their own GPS units, are strongly encouraged to use them, although there are caveats if they are not suitable. Courses will run with a minimum of 4, and a maximum of 8 members. As the courses are GPS device-focused, they are based on modern Garmin GPS units, as these are the leading brand, although owners of other units, such as SatMap, are also catered for. This range of courses is not suitable for smartphone or wearable device users (although I also run such courses, and intend to offer these soon). As the number of participants is deliberately limited, there is scope for more personal tuition and mentoring. LOCATION & TIMINGS: Our classroom is in the Barton Seagrave Village Hall and the publicly accessible Wicksteed Park is minutes’ walk away providing much navigational intrigue in a relatively benign environment to practice skills. Both the Hall and Park have cafes (which may or may not be open) and offer shelter in the event of inclement weather. However, as much of the course is outdoors, it is essential to bring along clothing suitable for all weathers. The venue is well served by public transport via Kettering railway station and local bus services. It also has ample parking and is just one mile from J10 of the A14 with great access from the A1(M), M1, M6 and M11. There are plenty of local hotels, from budget to boutique; courses start at 10.00am and finish by 5.00pm. COST & EQUIPMENT: £35 per person per course, including GPS hire and course notes, but excluding refreshments (it is recommended that you bring a picnic lunch although some refreshments can be bought locally). You can book and pay on-line using Eventbrite (CPD is managed through CMS); cancellation is possible but not after 7 days prior to the course. Courses require a minimum number of 4 to guarantee running and, if that number is not met, the fee will be refunded.
