WORKSHOP CONTENT & LEARNING OUTCOMES

Bridging the gap between SPA and RCI is a one day update and training workshop for people who have completed their Single Pitch Award training and wish to become familiar with the new aspects of the Rock Climbing Instructor syllabus prior to assessment, or for those assessed under the SPA award to update their skills in line with the RCI syllabus. 

This practical indoor workshop is a great way to update and refresh your skills, revisit particular aspects of the scheme and provide an opportunity to exchange and share good practice under the supervision of an approved course director. 

This indoor workshop will include the following:

  • Wall risk management, site hazard, communications with wall staff and procedures
  • Warm ups - tools/exercises for warming up including games that teach
  • Planning different types of climbing sessions - single/multiple visits - aims and objectives
  • Teaching skills
    • Creating a learning environment
    • Effective communications
    • Teaching methods – IDEAS, EDICT etc.
    • Progressive reviewing and feedback.

  • Supervising an assistant indoors                  
    • Roles and scope of an assistant
    • Opportunities and liabilities
    • Briefing and position of most usefulness
  • Bouldering - Group management, traversing, spotting, exercises
  • Problem solving
  • Sports climbing, differences, bolt spacing and reliability
  • Techniques for lowering off sports climbs
  • Include general refresher of current syllabus skills if time allows.

EQUIPMENT/KIT REQUIRED

Please bring your personal climbing kit with you and wear appropriate clothing for the activity.

CATERING/FOOD

Please bring your own lunch, snacks and drinks for the day. Many of the walls used for these workshops will have a cafe/shop to purchase drinks/food.

WORKSHOP PROVIDER CREDENTIALS

All bridging the gap workshops are run by approved Mountain Training course directors of the SPA and now RCI schemes. This particular workshop is hosted by Alan Halewood.

WALL ENTRY

The wall entry fee is included in the price of this workshop.

CANCELLATION PROCEDURE

This workshop needs a minimum of 4 bookings to run. Attendees will be notified of cancellations or changes to the workshop 2 weeks before the date of the workshop. Attendees will receive a full refund or will have the option to transfer their booking to another available date.

If you are unable to attend the workshop, if cancellations are received up to 6 weeks before the workshop you will receive a full refund; less than 6 weeks but more than 4 weeks before the course: 50% refund; less than 4 weeks before the course date: no refund will be issued.
