Skills Day: Geography of the Yorkshire Dales with Mark Reid FRGS

WORKSHOP CONTENT & LEARNING OUTCOMES

We’ll look at the rocks beneath our feet, how these shape the landform, flora and fauna, as we ascend Buckden Gill from the Great Scar Limestone through the sequences of the Yoredale Rocks to the Millstone Grist series on the summit. We’ll explore the Iron Age settlements, lead mines, Enclosure Acts, land use, sheep and Roman Road as we go. We’ll discuss the impact of climate change on the Yorkshire Dales.

The purpose of this day is to give participants tools, ideas and sources of information to inspire, educate and inform people when leading groups in the Yorkshire Dales

EQUIPMENT/KIT REQUIRED

Attendees will need to be equipped for a days walking within a moorland environment and the conditions forecast including the relevant maps.

You will need to provide your own lunch and snacks.

Mark Reid is a Mountain Leader, Outdoor Instructor and author of ‘The Inn Way’ guidebooks. They are also a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society.
