Details
Due to Covid restrictions placed on SAIS, the Chris Walker Memorial Trust avalanche training programme will be run online.
The Chris Walker Memorial Trust www.chriswalkertrust.co.uk is offering space on four avalanche awareness training days for winter 2021, run by the Scottish Avalanche Information Service.
We are grateful that two days are again being sponsored by the Association of Mountaineering Instructors and are open to WCMI and WCMI trainees.
Two more days are open to qualified, full Winter Mountain Leaders, or anyone above that level.
Donations
As normal the trust is asking participants in 2021/2022, or from past years, to consider donating. Visit this page for the various ways for donating www.chriswalkertrust.co.uk/donate/
Also, CWMT has signed up to a donating phone app at www.sustainably.co
Chris was a highly talented, accomplished and popular mountaineer who loved to share his enthusiasm, knowledge and skills with others.
He already held the MIC, was a full member of the Association of Mountaineering Instructors and no doubt would have fulfilled his life-long dream of becoming a British Mountain Guide.
The trust offers funding to the BMG, AMI and MTA, to further their members’ and the public’s knowledge and understanding of avalanches and their hazards in the Scottish winter environment.
This day provides a unique opportunity to benefit from SAIS forecasters experience and knowledge, offering insights from their work in respect of hazard evaluation, public forecasting and knowledge of the dynamics and challenges in a Scottish winter.
Programme
A review of the Be Avalanche Aware process with specific emphasis on the Planning Phase. A series of exercises and discussions will help develop your understanding of the snow pack evolution and avalanche hazard development. These are the foundation skills for making good route planning decisions prior to going on the hill.
The new presentation format takes place over two consecutive evenings (2 hours each) and includes ‘home’ planning by the participants, based on detail from the first evening, leading to safe travel decisions made and presented on the second evening. Each evening starts online (Zoom) at 19:00
