Being able to identify trees in winter is a valuable skill to develop. It will lead to a better understanding of the ecology of trees and forests too. This workshop looks at the characteristics and identification features of forest trees both coniferous and broadleaf in the montane forests of the Swiss Alps. This half-day workshop will give you confidence to identify and talk about trees in winter. It is designed to develop your understanding of the natural world, leading you to become a better-informed leader. We will also look at wider environmental issues surrounding forestry, ecology and land use. A notebook, pencil and camera would be useful to bring along.
Please arrive for a 9 am start at the restaurant Tour d'Ai in Leysin. The workshop finishes about 12.30 pm.
Please bring warm clothing and appropriate footwear for a mountain day as the workshop we be predominetly outdoors, packed lunch, camera, pen and paper.
Leysin can be accessed by road and public buses from Le Sepey and also the cog-train from Aigle.
The workshop will be delivered by Jim Langley who is a specialist in ecology and co-author of ‘The Alps – A Natural Companion’. He holds the International Mountain Leader qualification and a Master’s degree in conservation and land management. He runs Nature’s Work an educational consultancy providing environmental CPD workshops for the outdoor industry and also bespoke outdoor learning programmes. He is a regular contributor to the publication The Professional Mountaineer.
