Mountain Training Association have teamed up with the Met Office to provide this specialist weather workshop specifically to support the syllabi of Mountain Training's qualifications as well as enhancing the knowledge of qualified leaders and instructors in their ability to apply information gained from available forecast information, practically whilst planning and dynamically whilst out in the hills and mountains.

Attendees will be given access to an online self-taught session using the pre-course resources and materials hosted on the new Met Office learning portal (exclusive to attendees) to gain a prior understanding of Airmasses and Weather Fronts. The Met Office plans to send workshop attendees the access details to their online portal 3 weeks before the event is scheduled to run;

The workshop will include:

  • Introduction
  • Where to find weather information
  • Understanding the UKs weather
    • Learn about air masses and fronts and how they apply to mountain weather
    • How to read a synoptic/weather chart
    • How mountains modify the weather
  • Interpretation the weather changes while out on the hill
    • A look at identifying clouds and how they can help us read the weather
    • Weather observing practical (depending on there being some weather to observe!)
  • Weather related hazards
    • Weather hazards in summer and winter
    • Planning a route according to the weather
  • Practical exercises
    • All sessions will be interspersed with exercises, putting into practice what you have learnt
  • Final discussion/any further questions

Aim: To help mountain leaders and hill walkers interpret weather information to assist with planning and safe passage.

By the end of the workshop you’ll be able to:

  • Interpret weather forecasts (media/online etc) and relate to mountain conditions
  • Use weather observations to identify a changing forecast situation and predict short term outcomes
  • Plan a route/activities based on weather impacts
  • Interpret a weather (Synoptic) chart and relate to mountain conditions
  • State the importance of air mass theory and what it means for mountain weather summer and winter
  • Identify weather that will bring snow to the mountains
  • State how mountains can impact on wind speeds/chill and temperature

The workshop is being run by professional Met Office trainers.

Directions to LOWER GRANGE FARM
These directions are suitable for all vehicles. Please do not stop, park or turn at the Yew Tree Pub. 

From the M2
Leave the M2 at Junction 3 and follow signs towards Maidstone down Blue Bell Hill (A229).
Midway down Blue Bell Hill take ‘Chatham Road’ directly after the Petrol Station.
At the crossroad turn left into ‘Tyland Lane’ and follow it until you reach another crossroad. Turn right into ‘Boarley Lane’. This will take you under the motorway bridge.
Directly after the bridge take the left hand turn past the ‘The Yew Tree’ Pub and follow the road for few hundred metres. Lower Grange Farm is on the right hand side.

From the M20
Leave the M20 at Junction 7 and join the A249 towards Maidstone.
At the first roundabout turn right onto ‘Bearsted Road’ (A249).
At the next roundabout go straight across onto ‘Penenden Heath Road’.
At the next roundabout turn right onto ‘Boxley Road’ and follow this over the motorway.
Turn left into ‘Grange Lane’ (directly after where the speed limit changes from 30 to 40mph). Follow Grange Lane until you come to a T-junction. Turn left and go under the motorway bridge.
Directly after the bridge take the left hand turn past the ‘The Yew Tree’ Pub and follow the road for a few hundred metres. Lower Grange Farm is on the right hand side.

CANCELLATION PROCEDURE:

This workshop needs a minimum of 4 bookings to run. Attendees will be notified of cancellations or changes to the workshop 2 weeks before the date of the workshop. Attendees will receive a full refund or will have the option to transfer their booking to another available date.

If you are unable to attend the workshop, if cancellations are received up to 6 weeks before the workshop you will receive a full refund; less than 6 weeks but more than 4 weeks before the course: 50% refund; less than 4 weeks before the course date: no refund will be issued.
