Award Description
This qualification trains and assesses candidates in the skills required to lead hillwalking groups in summer conditions on mountainous routes not requiring the planned use of a rope. Established in 1964, this was the first qualification created by Mountain Training.
The Mountain Leader scheme is designed for people who want to lead groups in the mountains, hills and moorlands of the UK and Ireland. If you love being out in the mountains and want to share your enthusiasm with others, become a Mountain Leader and you’ll never look back.
The Isle of Rùm is part of the Small Isles, Inner Hebrides Scotland, and a very special place to take the Mountain Leader Award Assessment.
Over the duration of 5 days candidates will be assessed on all aspects of the Mountain Leader Award syllabus. This assessment process includes a 3 day journey into the mountains, involving a 2 night 'wild camp'.
This assessment will be held at suitable locations around the island.
Sharing of transport and accommodation whilst travelling to & from this assessment is generally possible.
*Mark Valentine, of Your Mountain Adventure, is an experienced Mountain Leader Award Course Director with Snowdonia Mountain Skills, and will be coordinating Mountain Leader training & assessment programs.
**Mark is a trained Mental Health First Aider.
