About

WORKSHOP CONTENT & LEARNING OUTCOMES

Learn about moorland conservation in general and the importance of clough woodlands in particular while helping National Trust with tree maintenance up in the cloughs on the edges of the high moors of the Peak District. This event will provide both excellent learning and a valuable opportunity to give something back to our uplands by helping to restore these important habitats and fight climate change.

The National Trust’s Kinder and High Peak Estate contains some of our highest and most appreciated Peak District moorland that has many deep sided cloughs (ravines) running down the sides. These cloughs have benefited from a programme of native broadleaf tree planting in recent years. These woodlands provides habitat for many animals and plants, as well as helping to reduce the risk of flooding downstream. NT now need our help with the important task of releasing these young trees from their supporting tree tubes, now that they have become successfully established, ridding the landscape of these unsightly tubes.

NT staff will explain why these woodlands are so important to flooding relief, the flora and fauna they support, the reasons for the tree mix chosen and the likely benefits to the wider landscape as well as telling us more about moorland restoration in general and their wider work.

WHAT WILL THE WORK INVOLVE?

After being taken as close as possible by NT Landrover there’ll be an uphill walk followed by spending around 5 hours, working as part of a small team, supervised and directed by National Trust staff, walking across the rough and sometimes boggy moor tops, in and out of cloughs, allowing us to examine the young trees, removing their supporting tubes and take these tubes away. The work will be moderately physically demanding yet well withing the capabilities of reasonably fit hill goers While doing this there will be lots to see and talk about (with plenty of laughs to be had too I'm sure)!

EQUIPMENT/KIT REQUIRED

You will need to bring sturdy and ideally waterproof walking boots (gaiters recommended), full waterproof jacket and over-trousers, sufficient warm layers, a first aid kit for personal use (+ any medication you need), warm gloves for the walk in/out and a hat i.e. all your usual kit for a full day out on the hill in late winter. The moors can be inhospitable so plenty of warm layers are advised. If we’re lucky enough to have a sunny day a sun hat and some sunscreen may even be needed!

You will also need a pair of heavy duty (gardening style) gloves (although if you forget them NT may have a spare pair or two).  All other tools and equipment will be supplied by the National Trust.

CATERING/FOOD

No catering is provided so please be sure to bring along sufficient food and drink (including a flask with a hot drink might be a good idea) for a full day working out on the hill. There are no public toilets either, of course.

WHERE WILL THE WORK TAKE PLACE?

The tree maintenance will take place in the cloughs on the side of the moors of the Upper Derwent Valley, however the meeting point will (unless told otherwise nearer the time) be a car park on the western side of Ladybower Reservoir known as Derwent Overlook car park, OS grid ref. SK 1729 8900 (it’s about 3 miles drive down the reservoir side road, after the the turn off from the A57 at Ashopton Viaduct, just a short distance before the Fairholmes Visitor Centre car park).

National Trust will ferry volunteers from our cars, by Landrover, to the nearest road-head before a relatively short up-hill walk onto the moors and to the planting site.

WHEN WILL THE WORK TAKE PLACE?

The date is Sunday 15th October. We will need to arrive at the appointed car parking place before 9 am to get ready (it’s a popular place), be briefed and transfer to National Trust transport sometime before 9.30 am. We’ll be returned to our cars for around 4.00 pm - 4.30 pm.

WHO CAN TAKE PART
