Tyrolean Traverse and Tension

Workshop Content

This workshop will look at some of the work done to develop the Tyrolean for Groups module being delivered by through the British Caving Associations Leadership Award scheme and how this may help those rigging and managing Tyroleans for groups outdoors in an adventure setting. Broadly the day will cover.

• Tyrolean hazards; misconception and learning from experience
• Mechanical advantages in tensioning systems
• Technical equipment
• Forces in rigging
• Forces in practice
  • A portable load-cell will be available to measure the forces involved in real-time
• Tyrolean rigging considerations & group management
  • Anchor selection and building belays
  • Horizontal Tyrolean’s, and
  • Descending Tyrolean’s (zip lines)
• Equipment care and considerations

The workshop will be delivered as a whole day with a mix of theoretical and practical session outside.

Candidates will need to be prepared to work outside in whatever weathers thrown at us! Candidates will need a harness and helmet, ideally with a set of cowstails made from dynamic rope (not a sling configuration).

All technical equipment including ropes will be provided, however if candidates have any ‘toys’ they’d like to bring along with by all means do.
