What's the purpose of the day?

We are all used to navigating on the OS 1:25k maps.  But some people struggle to work with maps at other scales, and typically on assessment they will be asked to do just that, whether it's OS 1:50k, or Harvey's, or whatever.

So this is a day navigating from maps at those other scales, and getting you used to thinking about working with just the information you can gather from the map in front of you, and crucially asking yourself the questions, 'How big? How far?'

We begin the day over coffee in the Youth Hostel, as we talk through the story of mapping in the UK, and look at some of the maps which this country has produced over the years.  Then we ascend the hill behind the hostel, and attempt to find our way about from a bewildering array of maps of different ages and scales.

At the end of the day, you should be more confident at working with maps of any scale.  And unfazed by the 1:50k day on assessment!

What kit do I need? 

The usual for a hill day!  Check the weather forecast, but as a minimum you will want to bring full waterproofs, food and drink, spare layers, and your personal meds and first aid kit. 

As this is a peer-led day, you are responsible for your own health and well-being.  However, if you have any medical conditions we should know about, please tell us.

Joining instructions

We will meet at YHA Edale.  There is verge parking at the foot of their lane, but this has been very much reduced by local landowners.  Be prepared to have to park in the village, and walk across; the start time is deliberately late to allow for this. Or perhaps we might consider a shuttle with vehicles.
