Expected Learning Outcomes

An awareness of sight impairment through experiencing it and how it affects sight impaired people trying climbing and what can be done to give a worthwhile climbing experience for them in a safe and supporting way.

COST

There is no cost to the event, however you will still need to pay your climbing entry (£14 for a single entry) and the trainer has requested a voluntary contribution to the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB). Here is a link to donate: https://www.rnib.org.uk/get-involved/donate/

Workshop Content

- Introductions and any climbing wall admin eg registration, belay tests etc.

- Sight impairment and some common conditions.

- Moving around the wall environment, toilets, hazards etc.

- Safeguarding issues.

- Warming up and stretching in a safe space.

- Intro to movement on ground using bouldering wall and stepping stones, types of holds.

- EFFECTIVE CLEAR COMMUNICATION.

- Intro to climbing top rope routes on wall.

- Finding holds by feel or through assistant using EFFECTIVE CLEAR COMMUNICATION on the ground or climbing alongside the climber.

- Using communication devices eg headsets etc.

- Exercises and progression eg putting on harnesses and tying in.

- Use of autobelay systems.

- Tagging holds to represent specific routes.

- Problems and limitations.

- Next steps discussion. Summary and questions/ feedback.

CANDIDATES WILL BE WEARING SIGHT IMPAIRED GLASSES TO REPRESENT DIFFERENT CONDITIONS for as much of the course as possible and swapping to experience different conditions and how they can limit performance.

EQUIPMENT/KIT REQUIRED

Rock shoes, harness, belay device and locking carabiner, mobile phone (preferably with whatsapp installed), ear pods (preferably bluetooth) and clothing for climbing indoors.

Des Barnett is a Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor. He is registered as severely sight impaired so qualified through personal experience
