WORKSHOP CONTENT & LEARNING OUTCOMES

Women’s Navigation Workshop

This is a peer led day of navigation, for those wanting to practice, build on existing skills and feel confident in walking away from paths and tracks.  We will cover compass work and navigational techniques to cross open country, identifying and using large and small contour features, timings, pacing skills and route choice.  We will use a mixture of rights of way as well as open access areas within the Aston Rowant National Nature Reserve.  The area is a rich chalk grassland with some rare and beautiful plants and butterflies so we will tread carefully when off the paths and use the opportunity to identify some of the flora and fauna as well.

The day will be a supportive environment for women to share their knowledge, learn new tips from other women and feel comfortable to practice their hill navigation skills.

We will meet in the village of Lewknor at 10:00 hrs outside the church and aim to finish around 16:00 hrs.  OS Grid Ref: SU 71609 97579

EQUIPMENT/KIT REQUIRED

Please bring your own maps and compasses if you have them, but there will be spares on the day if you need them.  The OS map for the area is Chiltern Hills West 171.

You should dress appropriately for the weather and wear sturdy footwear.  Bring medication if you require it.

You may also like to have a watch for timing.

CATERING/FOOD

Please bring your own packed lunch, snacks and plenty of water for a full day outside.

Peer led by Angelina Messenger (ML) and Philippa Sanders (LL and HML) who both teach navigation and provide National Navigation Award Scheme awards.
