Volcan Imbabura Ascent 4,630m Ecuador
We awake have a quiet breakfast and climb on the bus, we drive back towards Ibarra and start climbing through the open farmland to where the track ends the trail head, Imbabura is 4,630m but were heading for the more accessible North Peak slightly lower at 4,600m. The weather is good but cloud and swirling mist obscures the summit, and easy start turns into a grassy slog with the a rude last section and a short ridge scramble finish. It’s good to get to the top but sadly not as rewarding a view as we had hoped. The cloud is still in and we only have brief views of the jagged caldera rim. On the way down we have some consolation with views of Cayambe, tomorrow’s destination.
