Three day expedition with a friend and an inexperienced walker who was interested in doing the Outdoor Education BSc at LJMU, Liverpool. Day one was very windy which slowed us down greatly resulting in a late (and dark) finish on day one. We stayed at the Faindouran Lodge in Glen Avon, but not before after our friend fell into the river whilst crossing it at the fords of avon, fortunately near the refuge!
Day two the wind had dropped, but the snow on the hill tops and the cloud cover created white out conditions . This allowed us to practice walking on bearings, `leapfrogging` and other navigational techniques to great affect and with surprising accuracy! We camped that night near Lochbuilg Lodge.
On day three we went over Cairn Sawvie (820), Brown Bow hill (823m) and down via Carn Oighreag (704) to Corgarff and our lift back to the Lazy duck hostel. These were probably the three days that game me the most confidence in my ability to navigate out of all the walking that I`ve ever done. It was the first time that I`d walked through a whiteout over a featureless plateau and managed to come out within 100m of the point that we were aiming for!
Area :
The Cairngorms
The Cairngorms are ‘a little piece of the arctic in Scotland’ according to the SMC Munros Guide and the area contains many of the tallest peaks in the East Highlands. Ben Macdui (1309m), Cairn Gorm (1244m) and Braeriach (1296) are probably three of the better known and the whole area is full of steep corries and high plateaux. Access to the mountains is typically from Aviemore or Braemar.
