Parking down at auchlean, five of us, followed the path south down Glen feshie for almost 5km to pick up a land rover track that leads pretty much to the summit of the Munro. It was icy in avoidable patches until about 700m when we needed to put crampons on. Once on the top the wind was bitterly cold so we didn`t hang around. Unfortunately crossing back across the plateau towards sgurr gaoith Amanda went through some ice deeply into some bog which twisted her knee. We sat in a group shelter for about half hour to ease her knee and give her some painkillers, which helped and she was okay to continue.
We descended a different track, which had deep unconsolidated snow in it, should have gone down the same way! Good visibility all day cloud base above our top, but down over the higher mountains.
Area :
The Cairngorms
The Cairngorms are ‘a little piece of the arctic in Scotland’ according to the SMC Munros Guide and the area contains many of the tallest peaks in the East Highlands. Ben Macdui (1309m), Cairn Gorm (1244m) and Braeriach (1296) are probably three of the better known and the whole area is full of steep corries and high plateaux. Access to the mountains is typically from Aviemore or Braemar.
