My first outing for a big seriously long day up one of the Cairngorm giants.
Ten hours.
Six people, led by Johnny our friend.
We had crampons on after the chalamain gap. Was a long hard slog going up to braeriach, and no views from the summit. Six hours up! However, we learned the art of safe bum sliding down, crampons off, and down to the lairig ghru in no time at all. Learned some axe arresting and had a fantastic play about in the snow. Cloud base around 1100m. A bit of wind but nothing much.
Area :
The Cairngorms
The Cairngorms are ‘a little piece of the arctic in Scotland’ according to the SMC Munros Guide and the area contains many of the tallest peaks in the East Highlands. Ben Macdui (1309m), Cairn Gorm (1244m) and Braeriach (1296) are probably three of the better known and the whole area is full of steep corries and high plateaux. Access to the mountains is typically from Aviemore or Braemar.
