Description

Very clear day with really good visibility. parked the car near the roundabout at the top of Howden Reservoir (SK167938) as I had learnt from an earlier trip that it is a long walk to the main car park.
Route: headed north alongside northern tip of Howden reservoir and then north and then turning east to follow the river derwent up into the moors. Climbed to the summit of Featherbed moss through Hoar Clough (SK143980) and then picked up path running East over Howeden edge and the trig point on the summit of Hardern Moss/Broadhead Clough Head. The hills were empty and we didn't see anyone at all on the top. We did see lots of mountain hares which I had never seen here before. Some of them still had their white coats and didn't realise there was no snow to hide in. We carried on to the top of Margery Hill and then doubled back to take the bridleway back down to the river/reservoir and returned to the car.

Area : Dark Peak

Is situated between Sheffield and Manchester. The underlying rock is Millstone grit which is often exposed at the edge of the higher peat bogs for which the area is famous.
