Description

12km + 930m. Fort William, Central Highlands.
Parked at the Nevis Range car park (12.15) and worked my way along forest tracks towards a micro-hydro dam at GR161759 where an interesting river crossing was made on the iron work just above the dam! Continued up the track to the upper dam (13.00) before heading south over rough ground to join large snowfields up onto the ridge and onto Càrn Beag Dearg, (15.00) another deleted top. There was a remarkable temperature inversion as I reached the summit and entered brief moments of bight sun in the cloud. It would have been great conditions for a bocken spectre if wet heavy cornices were not guarding the edge. I had to be very careful of the edge both gong up and down in the clag on the large snowfields. Got back to the upper dam (16.00) and recrossed the stream (slightly lower now) and retraced my tracks back to the van (16.45). As I walked out I realised how dumb I had been not to use the mountain bike, probably would have save an hour.

Area : Ben Nevis & Aonach Mor (Fort William To Loch Leven)

This area covers the mountains between Fort William, Loch Leven (to the south) and Loch Treig (to the east). The area includes Ben Nevis and Carn Mor Dearg, The Mamores, The Aonachs and The Grey Corries. An impressive 20 Munros are split equally by Glen Nevis and the waters of Abhainn Rath. Relatively accessible from the A82, these mountains hold some classic walking and climbing routes such as The Ring of Steall in the Mamores and Point Five Gully on Ben Nevis. Includes all major peaks above 600m.
