Tonight`s climb turned into a coaching session for one of the new members to our social group - there were five of us there and Joe is 19yrs old and new to climbing.
I could see he was having trouble with some of the routes, so I offered to help him out which he agreed to.
After watching him climb I picked up on some basic techniques he hasn`t achieved yet - accurate foot placement, body position and rock overs among others.
I used three different routes to aid different techniques - choosing and vertical wall ladder climb to practise rock overs, foot placement and body position to be side-on to the wall.
Another sweeping route was used to practise side-on positioning, step-throughs and foot placement.
Whilst another route (slightly harder and which Joe was having trouble with) was used to practise finding suitable foot positions to support Joes weight.
He is not able to support his body weight on his arms yet, and so all of the work was geared towards Joe finding a good stable base for his feet before moving his hands.
A really important session I feel for him and me.
