Description

37. Hard Knott: leading 3 people (Clive, Lucy, Meryl). Weather: broken cloud, fog on top, visibility approx 50m, occasional shower. Walked from Parking (Grid NY213012) up the Esk Valley to Throstle Garth, then turned right and off-path over Hard Knott. Weather was in the cloud at this point, Lucy was a bit quiet, but some sugar in the form of Haribo perked her up. Needed compass navigation to get across the tops. Walked around the wet peat areas, keeping to the hillocks. Misread terrain slightly, such that the final hillock that I thought would take us to the path down was the next one on. But I was confident that we were at least heading in the right direction! Scrambled down the southwest side of Border End, then walked back via the Roman Camp.

Area : Southern Fells (Scafell Pike)

The Southern Fells Include Scafell Pike, the highest peak in England, occupy a broad area to the south of Great Langdale, Borrowdale and Wasdale. High and rocky towards the centre of the Lake District, the Southern Fells progressively take on a moorland character toward the south west. In the south east are the well known Furness Fells, their heavily quarried flanks rising above Coniston Water.
