23.(1) This was my initial ascent for an overnight bivvy on y Garn. After eating with the SARDA Wales team down in Rhyd Ddu, I headed up toward Y Garn by the most direct route. I diverted via Cwn Marchnad to pick up water. Nearing the top I was passed by a group of orienteers running down into the valley. As I reached the peak cairns, the sun was setting over Holyhead Mountain. I wasn't the only person watching the sunset: I chatted with another couple who had stayed up to watch the sun go down. Once the sun was below the horizon, they left for the long drive back east toward Manchester and me to my bed...
After an unexpectedly warm (7degC) night's sleep, I traversed the Ridge from Y Garn to Carnedd Coch, including an interesting scramble just west of the north end of Craig Pennant. My Salomon boots were reliably rubbish on the slightly damp rocky terrain, so I took it easy along the paths, very aware that there was no one else for miles around this early in the morning! From Carnedd Coch I decided to take an alternative route back down, sliding on my bum on the grass to get to the disused quarries of Cwm Trwysgl (SH549497) before returning to my car parked at SH567526.
