Description

This is a walk that I led for Huddersfield Rucksack Club.
Starting from Gradbach, we headed southwest onto the Dane Valley Way to Danebridge and then northeast to Hangingstone Farm and the Hanging Stone.
From there we headed east, making our way on to the ridge which we followed all the way past Bearstone Rock and over The Roaches to Rockhall.
I'd planned to go over Hen Cloud and on to the Churnet Way, but with Thunderstorms forecast for later, and our group making slow progress over The Roaches, I decided that a shortcut was needed.
I'd already planned a visit to Lud's Church, so a route there from our position was quickly worked out.
From Rockhall we took the path northeast to join the road and then turned left, heading back towards the path junction near Bearstone Rock.
One of our group was complaining of an injury being aggravated because of walking on the hard road surface, so just after Shaw House we headed west on to the moorland, forging our own path to Bearstone Rock.
From there we headed north and then took the path northwest through the woods to Lud's Church.
After Lud's Church we followed the path west, then east back to Gradbach.

Area : Dark Peak

Is situated between Sheffield and Manchester. The underlying rock is Millstone grit which is often exposed at the edge of the higher peat bogs for which the area is famous.
