Winter walk (January) from Grindleford Rail Station to Hathersage and back to Grindleford, via Padley Gorge and onto Hathersage Moor at Lawrence Field. Objective one was to locate the Stone Circle at the southern end of Hathersage Moor. I had made a cursory search on a previous trip up to Higger Tor and not located it. This time I plotted the coordinates and searched as though it was a cache site. According to the OS OL 1 map the center of the Stone Circle should be SK2525/7975. From the edge of the Moor the circle was not visible. Taking a bearing and navigating across the Moor to the grid coordinates there were several large stones to be found. Not in a circle. One was standing. Four others were were down disappearing into the bog. The GPS coordinates to the one standing are in an attached photo. Back to Owler Tor, and then Millstone Edge, Greenwood Farm, Throstle Nest at Hathersage Booths, then south to Kettle House, Rough Wood, Upper Padley, and the village of Gridleford (crossing the River Derwent to locate an all important pub, The Sir William, in Grindlesford. Then finishing back at Grindleford Rail Station. After storm Brendan over the past several days, with heavy rain, the trails and moor lands were very wet and muddy. The walk started with no rain, changing to light rain in the last hour.
Area :
White Peak
Lies to the south of the Dark Peak where the underlying rock is limestone - hence the name. Tends to be a little lower in altitude and also may be known as the Derbyshire or Staffordshire Dales.
