Description

Night Navigation Course. From Hope, Derbyshire to Win Hill Triangulation Point and back down to the valley. Small group of three trainees, with Matt Cooper of The Mountaineering Company instructing. Each of us took in turns navigating to way points from the village of Hope in the valley over varied hill and moorland terrain to the summit of Win Hill and back down to Hope. Each of the group were experienced with map and compass, so focus was on pacing and timing between way points, and identifying terrain features in darkness, through sound, the body feel of changes in terrain, and minute details shown on the map. Each of us successfully led legs of navigation to each target location.

Area : Dark Peak

Is situated between Sheffield and Manchester. The underlying rock is Millstone grit which is often exposed at the edge of the higher peat bogs for which the area is famous.
