Description

From Buxton to Shining Tor (559m). 5 Hours 31 minutes, 11.69 miles. Poor visibility with heavy cloud, fog and mist throughout the walk, with a couple of short periods of light rain/snow mix. From Buxton to Burbage, onto Goyt's Moss to Derbyshire Bridge, to Cat & Fiddle, and up to Shining Tor. At the Triangulation Pillar on Shining Tor, visibility was about 50 meters or less, with mist and fog blowing horizontal at 20 to 28 mph , and temperature of 6C (from my Kestrel weather station). Back down off of Shining Tor I took a more northerly return route over Stake Side and Stake Clough to Goytsclough Quarry, crossing the River Goyt, up to Goslin Farm, Burbage and back to Buxton. I had estimated the walking time for the trek at 4.5 hours. With a ~15 minute break at Shining Tor, 10 minutes at Derbyshire Bridge, and ~15 minutes at Goytsclough Quarry, and a few more short breaks of 5 minutes each, I think I was right on with my estimate.

Area : Dark Peak

Is situated between Sheffield and Manchester. The underlying rock is Millstone grit which is often exposed at the edge of the higher peat bogs for which the area is famous.
