Description

Thursday, May 27, 2020 - Quality Hill and Moorland Day - Solo: Hadfield - Longdendale Trail/Trans Pennine Trail (TPT) along Bottoms Reservoir, Valehouse Reservoir, Rhodeswood Reservoir to Torside Reservoir. Turned South, then East on the 'TPT East' climbing up Torside Clough to John Track Well, then Bleaklow Head (633m), Wain Stones and Hern Stones. Turned back North to Bleaklow, and then the trail North and then NE along Near Black Clough, descending to Woodhead Station where the old rail line entered three tunnels, now closed. Turning back West hiked the 10K back to Hadfield. Total Distance: 17.10 miles; Total Time: 7 hours, 2 minutes; Elevation Gain: 1,713 ft. Last time I hiked to Bleaklow was in mid winter, starting from Glossup. It was foggy, misty, with sleet, and very low visibility. I wanted to make the trek along Torside Clough again with good visibility. Last time I could hear roaring water falls down in the Clough, but could see less than 10 to 20 meters. Visibility was very good for this trip, but not nearly as dramatic as expected. Water levels were very low in the cloughs (and the reservoirs), and the Moor was very dry. Navigation was mostly visible major trails, though turning North from Bleaklow head and traversing across Far Moss to find the source of Near Black Clough required compass bearings and looking for catch points to find the point where the trail down Near Black Clough became obvious. I compared the use of OS Explorer OL 1 map with the Harvey Superwalker XT25, Peak District North Map. The trail details and readability of the Harvey Map was much better than the OS Explorer.

Area : Dark Peak

Is situated between Sheffield and Manchester. The underlying rock is Millstone grit which is often exposed at the edge of the higher peat bogs for which the area is famous.
