Description

Fabulous winter day! Leading with my wife Marion seconding. I have never experienced conditions quite like this: brilliant blue skies and warm sunshine, combined with a complete blanket cover of deep snow down to road level. As we progressed up the ridge, hazy cloud slowly advanced from the south accompanied by a keen little breeze, and on the descent we were glad of every stitch of winter clothing. On the approach through the pine plantations, we gladly followed the deep furrow ploughed by groups the previous day. The route itself was pleasant and gave no difficulties, with some helpful little patches of frozen turf on the steeper steps. Total time taken 8 hours 15 minutes! Reflecting very slow progress in deep snow.

Area : Creag Meagaidh, Beinn a' Chaorainn and the Monaliath

The winter climbs of Creag Meagaidh take a while to come into condition, but when they do they provide some of the best ice and steep gully climbs in Scotland, highly prized. This area also includes the popular Beinn a' Chaorainn and the more esoteric opportunities in the Monaliath. In a rare winter ice forms on Creag Dubh Newtonmore, which is also included here.
