ROUTE: Slieve Bearnagh summit via Trassey Track car park and Hare's Gap. Return via the col below the Bearnagh Slabs
MEMBERS OF PARTY: With my wife Marion
CONDITIONS: Warm, some cloud on tops, breezy.
DURATION: Around 4 hours car to car
SKILLS PRACTISED: Navigation with map and compass, (from Hare's Gap to Bearnagh summit, in cloud) . Navigation with map only - following Mourne Wall westwards in descent to Bearnagh Slabs, then back to Trassey Track.
MOUNTAIN ENVIRONMENT: Summer conditions in The Mournes. Exposed Tertiary Granite at Bearnagh slabs, and on the historic wall - built in the early 20th Century to enclose the catchment area for the Belfast water supply.
KEY LEARNING POINTS/CONTRIBUTION TO EXPERIENCE: A chance to re-familiarise myself with old haunts: this would have been one of my first ever hillwalks as a teenager with my parents!
