Description

ROUTE: Ascent followed route in SMC Guide "Corbetts and other Scottish Hills". Descended via NE Ridge to get views of Lochan a' Choire Ghuirm, (as featured in Andrew Greig's "At the Loch of The Green Corrie", one of my favourite recent "nature writing" titles).
MEMBERS OF PARTY: With my wife Marion.
CONDITIONS: Cloudy, cool morning, becoming gradually brighter and warmer.
DURATION: 5 hrs 19 mins car to car
SKILLS PRACTISED: Navigation with map and compass
MOUNTAIN ENVIRONMENT: Golden Plover nesting on summit plateau. Beautifully remote corrie lochan.
KEY LEARNING POINTS/CONTRIBUTION TO EXPERIENCE: A pilgrimage! Having been inspired by the book, and a BBC Scotland programme based on it, a real pleasure to visit the scenes in the flesh. It didn't disappoint - a gem of a mountain location! And the resonance with MacCaig's poems adds an extra cultural dimension.

Area : Coigach to Cape Wrath

This area is situated on the north-western tip of Scotland and contains 4 Munros (from biggest to smallest); Ben More Assynt (998m), Conival (987m), Ben Klibreck (962m) and Ben Hope (927m). Also included in the mountains list are all of the peaks above 700m. The southern boundary is the road which joins Ullapool to Lairg and then to the A9.
