This walk was a familiar 3 mile walk across open New Forest land that I know very well starting from my home. I chose to do this walk to practice my pacing.
When I got to the open forest there was mist and poor visibility.
I measured a number of distances between familiar points on the OS 1:25,000 map before using the appropriate Romer scale. I then paced these distances counting paces for 67 paces/100m and then picking up a stick and repeating. On the one where my pacing was 20 metres out I was able to use the linear feature of the fence corner to know I was in the correct place.
Although a familiar walk I found this useful to be able to concentrate fully on my pacing.
