Description

We initially planned to climb Gully 1, however the crux of the climb was too ice (solid ice block) and I was unhappy to climb this section this time. WE descended back to Red Tarn, regrouped with a hot coffee and decided to contour around Red Tarn to the West tip of Striding Edge and ascended the ridge here and then up to the steep mountain side to Summit of Hellvelyn. Our descent was via Swirral Edge. Equipment used : Crampons and Touring Axe. A very cold day so winter clothing and winter boots were worn. The snow line started around from back in Gelnnridding with us encountering ice at higher levels and on the summit plateau. A great day on the mountains.

Area : Eastern Fells

From the Kirkstone Pass to the M6.
