Description

Borrowdale Fells and Glaramara: Start and finish at Borrowdale YHA. From valley floor, climbed up onto Borrowdale Fells. At "Tarn at Leaves" turned due south to Rosthwaite Fell 'Cam' (612m). Continued south up to Combe Door and onto Combe Head (735m). Attempted to ascend the north face of Combe Head by scrabbling up the wet rock face but did not find a viable route, circled around the crag to ascend the south face. The ridgeline of the Borrowdale Fells is very rocky and craggy. Continued south to the summit of Glaramara (783m). Much like Combe Head, looked for lines of ascent up the north face, but ended up circling the base to ascend the north west approach to the summit. After Glaramara summit, turned back north on a more westerly return across Thornythwaite Fell and descended back to the valley floor Strands Bridge, and crossing the B road to Folly Bridge and back to the Borrowdale YHA parking lot.

Start Time: 9:30 - Finish: 16:05, Total Time: 6 hours 35 minutes.

Route Planning included review of OS OL4 Explorer 1:25000 map for overview, and OS Maps App plan printed and laminated. The route was walked as planned.

Weather reports were reviewed on Met Office Special Forecast - Mountains, for Glaramara summit and Borrowdale, and MWIS report for The Lake District, as well as monitoring the MWIS "Fleeting View" videos in the days leading up to the walk.

Ground conditions under foot were wet and the rocks were very slippery, as this route was much more rocky than anticipated, especially on the short scrambles to the three summits.

I would usually have a .gpx file from my SATMAP GPS, but it is under warranty service (for the second time), so I uploaded the planning file from OS Maps App.

Area : Southern Fells (Scafell Pike)

The Southern Fells Include Scafell Pike, the highest peak in England, occupy a broad area to the south of Great Langdale, Borrowdale and Wasdale. High and rocky towards the centre of the Lake District, the Southern Fells progressively take on a moorland character toward the south west. In the south east are the well known Furness Fells, their heavily quarried flanks rising above Coniston Water.
