First day of our week in Scotland. Avalanche warning was moderate so we walked in with the intention of practicing some of our basic skills, arrest, anchors and test pits and finish with a possible ascent of No. 2 gully and descending by no.4.
We were happy with the conditions up to 100m from the base of the gully where we noticed a small amount of debris scattered around. As we neared the entrance, snow that we assume was coming off the top of the gully started to run out and slide across the top of the existing snow pack. as it increased we made the decision to back off and continue with the skills practice.
Area :
Ben Nevis and Carn Mor Dearg
Ben Nevis is certainly the biggest and most famous winter climbing ground in Scotland, with something for everyone from the debutante to the most experienced and skilled. The almost alpine grandeur of the north face can, in a good winter, transform into a world where climbable snow-ice forms at almost every angle. It provides climbs suitable for any stage of the winter, from early season snowed-up rock climbs to late season ice wall specials. Also included here are the small number of winter climbing opportunities on the neighbouring Carn Mor Dearg.
