Description

Following an MBA meeting, another day of gale force winds. I decided I would give a go to the eastern satellites of Meagaidh. Went for Carn Liath first to have the SE wind on my back. It wasn't too bad at 700 & 800m but became pretty hostile above. Summit of Carn Liath at 1006m was pretty wild. Careful nav & pace counting worked well on the ridge towards Stob Poite Coire Ardair, mostly between 900 & 960m but I was getting quite a battering. Below the east end of Stob Poite at 991m the slope is quite steep & looked icy. I was thinking that I don't want to stop to put on crampons & had already been avoiding stopping for food. I realised that if I can't stop for food or crampons then I'm not really in control of the situation & I had been aware that this col was the last good place to bale out before 2km at over 1000m and with crags barring the escape. My decision to descend was clear and the descent itself was fine, wind suddenly decreasing below about 800m (17).

Area : Creag Meagaidh Loch Lochy To Loch Laggan)

This area includes the famous Creag Meagaidh Range and surrounding peaks of at least 600m. It stretches east of the A82 between Spean Bridge and Invergarry, and north of the A86 as far east as Stob Coire Dubh. There are a large number of impressive winter climbs in Coire Ardair and endless navigation opportunities on and around the high central plateau of Creag Meagaidh itself. The mountains to the north and east of this range are under East Highlands, Monaliadth Mountains.
