Description

Beinn Resipol with Marion in an August heatwave. Via the east ridge from Strontian village and Ariundle oakwoods. On the way back to Edinburgh after a day's scrambling on the Ardnamurchan gabbro outcrops and a wild swim at Sanna Bay!
Fantastic views of Rum from the summit. 20 plus degrees C and zero wind. Plagues of flying ants. Very sweaty even in shorts and tee-shirt! Underestimated the energy required to climb untracked blanket bog. Very rich, diverse bogland plant communities, hence the abundance of insects! Dead flower spikes of Narthecium ossifragum a very prominent feature in the sunny conditions. Leaving the summit, we met a chap wandering rather aimlessly, carrying a plastic water bottle but without rucksack or sunhat. He seemed disoriented. When questioned, he said he had left his rucksack somewhere near the cairn. He had come up the west ridge from the Resipol campsite - at this point, he was some way down the east ridge. We took him back to the cairn and found the rucksack nearby, pointing him in the direction of the village, which luckily was clearly visible, as he had no map. We were confident he didn't have heat exhaustion or heatstroke, so continued our descent.
A cautionary tale of the dangers of going badly equipped even in perfect weather!
6 hours car to car.
