From 2nd September to 21st September 1978 when I was 6 years old, I walked the Pennine Way with my parents, starting at Edale and camping all the way to Kirk Yetholm. The route was not so well known in those days, so going was tough in places. I recall some extremely wet days, including one where we went up Pen-y-Ghent and arrived at the camp site with water slopping in our boots, it had rained that much. And at another point in Teasdale by High Force, the wind was so strong it blew me clean off my feet. The farmer allowed us to sleep in his barn that night. A lady in Alston at the Tourist Information Centre baked us a chocolate cake as she had not seen anyone as young as me pass that way before! I remember seeing an adder in the Northumberland hills. We had of course undertaken a lot of training in Derbyshire, notably the Dark Peak, and the Lake District, before we set off on this adventure. Being so young I cannot remember too much about the entire journey, but I did keep a diary. Unfortunately this was lost in a house fire recently :( I do still have a newspaper cutting from the time to prove it though. I learnt my map-reading skills from my father at this time, he had learnt his skills during his time in the Army.
Area :
Dark Peak
Is situated between Sheffield and Manchester. The underlying rock is Millstone grit which is often exposed at the edge of the higher peat bogs for which the area is famous.
