Aiming to finalise my munro count, 5 of us set up to 1141 to gain Beinn Mheadhoin. I had had three previous attempts at this mountain, always in winter.
Visibility arouns 1000m for the entire day, lifting occasionally to give the odd view. Deep snow drifts, we opted not to use snowshoes due to the constant change in terrain, crampons were used on the descent to Loch Avon.
The summit of the mountain, the approaching weather system arrived. Big time, with a hasty bearing from the summit directly done to the eastern end of Loch Avon, a very cold and deep river crossing, we ascended back up to ciste Mhearead keeping high above it as we neared the top. Returned down windy ridge to the cars. Which took a while in the wind.
16km. 9.5 hours.
Area :
The Cairngorms
The Cairngorms are ‘a little piece of the arctic in Scotland’ according to the SMC Munros Guide and the area contains many of the tallest peaks in the East Highlands. Ben Macdui (1309m), Cairn Gorm (1244m) and Braeriach (1296) are probably three of the better known and the whole area is full of steep corries and high plateaux. Access to the mountains is typically from Aviemore or Braemar.
