Back up to Ciste Mhearad today with a group of 4 who had dome some winter skills and were coming to improve. We covered navigation and timing to the Ciste, revisited daggering and emergency shelters, before letting the group take turns to walk on their bearings to the summit of cairngorm and down to 1141, with us tweaking techniques and offering guidance.
Lots of chat about snow pack and avalanche conditions.
A quick re cap of ice axe arrest on the return and they were all ready to head out for bigger things feeling more confident in themselves.
Area :
The Cairngorms
The Cairngorms are ‘a little piece of the arctic in Scotland’ according to the SMC Munros Guide and the area contains many of the tallest peaks in the East Highlands. Ben Macdui (1309m), Cairn Gorm (1244m) and Braeriach (1296) are probably three of the better known and the whole area is full of steep corries and high plateaux. Access to the mountains is typically from Aviemore or Braemar.
