Coniston Wetherlam Loop from Walna Scar.
A mountain journey day from Walna Scar on a very cold but clear day. From Walna Scar Car Park ascended Old Man via Low Water path through the Quarries. Main hazard was thin layer of ice on the path thus requiring some care. From there along the ridge to Swirl Band which provided a good opportunity to time a couple of long legs. Then traversed off path north east to point 695 and then up to the summit of Grey Firar. Returned to point 695 and then up to summit of Great Carrs. From there down via the Prison Band to Swirl Hause and along to Wetherlam summit before returning on same path. From Swirl Hause down to Levers Water, across the Weir and back to car park as darkness fell.
Area :
Southern Fells (Scafell Pike)
The Southern Fells Include Scafell Pike, the highest peak in England, occupy a broad area to the south of Great Langdale, Borrowdale and Wasdale. High and rocky towards the centre of the Lake District, the Southern Fells progressively take on a moorland character toward the south west. In the south east are the well known Furness Fells, their heavily quarried flanks rising above Coniston Water.
