I led a group of fell runners on a recce of part of Leg 5 of the Bob Graham Round, focusing on the fells around High Spy, Hindscarth, and Maiden Moor. During the outing, I passed on knowledge about reading contour lines and understanding the aspect of a hill, helping the group to compare what they saw in the landscape to their maps. The weather was overcast, and the conditions were calm, which made for a productive session of Hiking, running and learning. The distance covered, coupled with the substantial ascent and descent, made it a solid day of mountain walking with an educational focus.
Also covered Dale Head and Robinson as for some reason they haven't been counted in the Details overleaf.
Area :
Western Fells
The Western Fells form the southern wall of the Buttermere valley and the northern fence of Wasdale. Between the two lies Ennerdale so that in effect the group is the shape of a single horseshoe, each branch about 10 miles in length.
At the head of Ennerdale stands Great Gable. The southern arc of the group travels due west from Great Gable, the main ridge consisting of Kirk Fell, Pillar, Scoat Fell, Haycock and Caw Fell.
