Description

Day 1 - Started from Ski Centre parking at 1900. Followed standard route towards ben Macdui via spur W of Coire an Lochain. Thick fog combined with darkness and snow cover above 800m meant mico nav was required from change of slope gradient at top of spur. Followed micro features to flattening at NH 990 002 where I set up camp for the night. midnight by time I was in my tent. Very poor visibility and moderate S winds
Day 2 - Followed route over Ben Macdui dropping down ESE to meet head of Allt Clach nan Taillear. Followed broad spur SW to a Beallach. From there prominent ridge S to summit of Carn a' Mhaim. From summit descended SE then SW to meet track and followed track to Corrour Bothy. From bothy ascended steep path W to beallach and then to summit of The Devils Point. Retraced steps to beallach and then ascended to summit of Cairn Toul. Retraced back down to the Corrour Bothy. Visibility was very poor all day above 800m making progress steadier than planned as detailed navigation was required all day. Also took time to practice steep ground work on ascent of devils point. 9hrs in total from camp to bothy. Very poor visibility and increasing S-SW winds through day. Very little rain
Day 3 - Walked out from bothy through Lairig Ghru and then Chalamain gap back to ski area. Heavy rain and strong winds

Area : The Cairngorms

The Cairngorms are ‘a little piece of the arctic in Scotland’ according to the SMC Munros Guide and the area contains many of the tallest peaks in the East Highlands. Ben Macdui (1309m), Cairn Gorm (1244m) and Braeriach (1296) are probably three of the better known and the whole area is full of steep corries and high plateaux. Access to the mountains is typically from Aviemore or Braemar.
