Description

This was my first winter route in Scotland alone.
The usual layby for parking was used for works vehicles, so I needed to park further along the road, lengthening the route by about a mile. 16.5km for the day.
The ascent up onto an caisteal was fairly scoured in places, visibility was in and out, and I believed I had reached the summit before I actually had! I quickly became aware of my mistake when I did happen to come to the summit.
the drop down towards beinn a chroin was very steep and icy in places, requiring my crampons to be put on. the ascent up onto it was difficult, with ice falling from the rocks with each footfall. genuinely I was scared and thought I had bitten off more than I could chew. I managed to negotiate very deep snow round the back of the crag to gain the summit. the cloud base was higher by now, with a view of the long valley in front to get back to my car.
however a three hour wade through waist deep snow, on top of boggy ground made it rather difficult. 8 hours to get these hills, and I crawled into my tent, grateful to be alive.

Area : Loch Lomond to Strathyre (Ben More)

Ben Lomond (974m) and Ben More (1174m) sit on opposite sides of this area which stretches from Loch Lomond to the western end of Loch Earn. There are two distinct sections, to the north and south of Glen Voil, with the remaining peaks sitting to the south of Loch Katrine. Access to the majority of the hills in this area is commonly from Crianlarich, Aberfoyle or Callander.
