Landscape Ecology for Mountain Leaders
This day is about making sense of our upland landscape from an ecological perspective, learning about nature and how to foster an interest in the detail of the landscape in an engaging way for non-ecologists.
We will walk through the Lake District landscape and talk natural history, botanical identification (friendly for all), montane habitats, the role of traditional farming, culture, environmental issues, land use, access, ‘the future’ and more. We will get up close and personal with moss, lichen and plants.
This course is about creating a story of the landscape in an engaging and accessible way, and answering clients’ questions with an informed, nuanced perspective. It is for mountain leaders who want to pass knowledge on to their clients with enthusiasm and creativity; so encouraging a deeper appreciation for the importance, connectedness and dynamic nature of the upland environment.
Note: whilst we will engage in identification, this is not a technical botany course. If you have a specific interest, check out Cumbria Bryophytes (with the brilliant Pete Martin), Cumbria Botanical Society, the Alpine Botanical Society, or search for more technical CPD.
