Making the right call- what the Mountain Instructor has in common with pilots. 

We understand that accidents can be avoided through sound judgement and decision making. At the heart of any good calls is an in-depth understanding of our environment, people and the activity we are undertaking. This situational awareness is what the MCI has in common with pilots and a load of other professionals who work in high risk, hyper-dynamic and complex settings.

This day-long workshop will explore what situational awareness is, its effect on sound judgement and decision-making and how we can develop these high-level situational skills, in ourselves and the people we train. The day will use a combination of indoor and outdoor sessions to illustrate practical approaches to the development of situational awareness.

Run by Dr Loel Collins

Loel Collins is a coaching specialist and independent researcher based in the UK. He has worked in the adventure sports and Outdoor Education sectors for over 35 years, principally in the National and Education Authority Centres and the Institute of Coaching and Performance at the University of Central Lancashire. Loel holds high-level coaching certification in a range of adventure sports. He is one of a few researchers investigating the specifics of coaching and coach education in adventure sports. His primary interest lies in understanding judgment and decision-making in complex environments, teaching, learning, and developing practical decision-making skills for instructors, coaches and outdoor professionals.

This workshop is open to full and trainee members.

You will need to bring food and drinks for the day, something to take notes with and outdoor clothing as some of the workshop will be outside.
