About

Sunday is all about putting Saturday's learning into practice and will consist of expertly led half day "learning" walks; giving you the opportunity to see the skills of a Lowland Leader being put into practice and to have the chance to discuss elements such as leadership, group management and managing hazards.

These walks will be led by qualified members with additional expert knowledge on a variety of subjects which they are excited to share with you.

Each walk will have a theme giving you the opportunity to enhance your knowledge on specific subjects, share your own knowledge and meet other members on the same journey.

Themes will include: nature connection and birds; navigation, a gap in the landscape; adding value by gaining knowledge about your area including geology, history, plant life, etc.; Nordic Walking techniques; and an opportunity to just come along and learn more about the Lowland Leader qualification itself.

Each walk is being run twice, you can choose any two of the themed walks: one for the morning and one for the afternoon. Sign-up sheets for the walks will be sent to you prior to the event as well as being available on the Saturday.

The choices are:

Birds of autumn and winter - Building a walk around our wildlife

This walk will focus on how to build a lowland walk around birds, bringing identification, habitat, colloquial stories outlining how to incorporate these into a guided walk. Bringing your Unique Selling Point (USP)/Passion to the fore and adding value beyond getting from A to B.

Navigation

The Ridgeway National Trail is very typical lowland terrain. This themed walk will help you get to grips with lowland terrain, give you an opportunity to practise your navigation.  It will explore the scope of the qualification and highlight the challenges you may face with footpaths and access.

Adding value to led walks

As leaders we can add value to our led walks by learning more about the history, geology, and flora and fauna of an area. Doing your research can enhance your walk and enable you to lead walks that may attract specific interest groups. We’ll explore this idea as a theme on focussing on how place and settlement is influenced by the geology and landscape of an area. The aim is to inspire you to be curious and research the areas you lead walks to enhance your clients experience and broaden your client base.

Nordic walking techniques

Nordic walking is an activity that can be enjoyed by everyone, regardless of age, ability and fitness level. The technique offers many wellbeing, health and fitness benefits and opportunities, and can appeal to a broad range of users - from people who may find walking challenging to ultra eventers! The Nordic walking technique uses poles actively to propel the walker along. It combines the simplicity and accessibility of walking with simultaneous core and upper body conditioning similar to Nordic skiing. This walk gives you the opportunity to experience Nordic walking first-hand and how the technique differs from just using walking poles. You will broaden your own skills and explore how becoming a Nordic walking instructor may also open up a new client base within a lowland setting.
