Saturday will comprise of a series of talks and workshops on the skills and experience required to be an excellent Lowland Leader.
Covering areas such as, understanding the terrain and scope of the qualification, including leadership styles and teaching and learning skills. What is a quality lowland walking day, what might you do and what sort of clients might you be engaging with.
The day is being hosted by volunteers from the England Central and London (Central and North) regional group, who are qualified leaders, along with a Mountain Training Lowland Leader course director. It will be a great opportunity to meet other members, ask lots of questions, network and learn from each other.
The Ridgeway National Trail is celebrating its 50th Anniversary, many of these trails pass through lowland country and are areas in which Lowland Leaders may operate.
Opening talk: Sarah Wright, The Ridgeway National Trails Officer, about the trail, its background, issues it faces and trail maintenance.
Lowland Leader qualification overview with questions and answers: Heather Mitchell, a Lowland Leader Course Director for Mountain Training. Heather will cover the syllabus skills and expectations as well as recent updates about the qualification. In this session we will have break out groups exploring and discussing topics related to the qualification
A journey to becoming a Lowland Leader: Abdul Janjirker, Assistant Regional Coordinator for the region, will then give a personal perspective about becoming a Lowland Leader and share his goal of making the outdoors more inclusive.
Short lunch break, followed by time allocated for prayer or to join in with a led mindfulness session.
Deconstructing the lowland walk: In the afternoon we'll break into small groups exploring "Deconstructing a walk" peeling back the layers as to what makes an excellent lowland walk.
British Nordic Walking talk: Steve Ellis, a Nordic Walking National Coach, will outline the benefits of the technique and how it enables people to get out and walk more.
Mind over Mountains the mental health in outdoors charity: Ian Sansbury, the CEO of Mind over Mountains, will talk about the charity's aim to restore mental health naturally and how it's not all about mountains as there's plenty of scope in the lowlands too.
