About

WORKSHOP CONTENT

We explore the blanket bog that covers the heart of Dartmoor, noticing the dominant plant species, learning how they have adapted to the nutrient-poor conditions, and searching out insect-eating sundews.  We see how degraded peatland has been restored.  Finally we drop down to visit areas of valley mire beside fast-flowing streams.

The session is for everyone who wants to help their clients appreciate the special qualities and value of these habitats.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

  • What blanket bog and valley mire are, how they form, degrade and can be restored
  • Importance of bog as a habitat and its value to people and the planet
  • Typical bog flora and fauna and how they are adapted to bog
  • Confidence showing off bog to your clients

EQUIPMENT/KIT REQUIRED

Come prepared for a day out on the moors, including food and drink.  You won’t need wellies; walking boots will be fine.  Bring binoculars if you have them; also a hand lens or compass with a magnifier.
