About

WORKSHOP CONTENT
This Lowland Leader Workshop is designed to be just right for those about to do their assessment or considering training. It will be a packed day and an opportunity to explore the Lowland Leader syllabus and practice many of the skills required to successfully achieve the standard required.

The day starts at 09.30 at the Odd Fellows Road Car Park in Hathersage (GR: SK231813).  There is a charge to park here for the day and we suggest arriving early to get a space.  There are a few places to park on the road side considerately in Hathersage but these are rare. Hathersage does have public conveniences and some useful shops too so it’s a good place to start our day.

For the navigation side our day will follow paths and tracks, and we will discuss the Lowland Leader remit as we go up Stanage Edge on acceptable routes. We will move from point to point identifying features in the landscape and relating them to the map. We will use the Dark Peak OS Map (OL1), supplemented by other map types and scales which we will bring along for you to try out and get familiar with. We will use the compass to help us set the map and check our directions and do some distance and pacing work.
Please do come with any questions you may have and we will do our best to work through these on the day.
Leadership is an important area of the Lowland Leader Award and we will spend time discussing leadership styles, group management and self-awareness. We will do some scenario work covering challenges you may face with a typical group and strategies to help you deal with these successfully. We will also cover some of the rules and regulations covering walking in the countryside that you must understand.

Many providers are now expecting you to do short talks, if you have these prepared we will try to give you the opportunity to try these out in a “safe and friendly” environment which can really help to calm the nerves when you come to assessment! We will discuss the talks and delivering them in an informative, fun and interesting way.  This is a peer-to-peer activity and attendees will be expected to be familiar and comfortable with walking in lowland areas in the Peak District. Whilst we will not be on steep ground there will be some areas where the ground is uneven and muddy, there will be some small rocks and there is the potential to trip. Attendees will be expected to be able to take care of themselves on this terrain. It is unlikely that we will have access to public conveniences once we leave Hathersage.

The Lowland Leader Day lasts approximately 6.5 hours (09.30 – 16.00) with a debrief afterwards for those who would like in a local café or hostelry. This will give you the opportunity to discuss the event, get to know other MTA members and support a local business over a hot drink or adult beverage.

EQUIPMENT/KIT REQUIRED

That could include clothing and equipment suitable for lowland walking in rain and windproof jacket (with hood) and over trousers, sturdy walking boots (knee-length gaiters also recommended), plenty of warm insulation layers, hats and gloves.

You will need to bring an OS Explorer map OL1 :Dark Peak (either laminated or in a good map case), a fine marker pen to mark your map, a navigation compass, a personal first aid kit, any medication you need and your mobile phone.
